What is Geofiction? Geofiction means: shaping imaginary worlds. Maybe you have read a book with a fictional story which also contained a selfmade map(e.g. Lord of the Rings). Such a map could be made for you about a family history, curriculum vitae or recent developments in your company! Martijn Kessler’s imaginary maps are like a sort of mirror for both the giver and receiver. Imagine a key figure in your life has an anniversary. The loved ones celebrate them with a special map of their life; names of those present, milestones and joint memories fill the map. Each map is handmade and drawn from the specific information most suited for the artwork. The information for the map can simply be supplied by you(e.g. in conversations and through email) or gathered in the context of a workshop.
Geofiction during a party.
A special way to give a party(for example a wedding) an artistic and very personal touch, is to chart the process leading up to the special event on the spot. At the party where the newlyweds are celebrated the guests will find a large, nicely illustrated sketch in the form of a map.
The guests are invited to indicate their place on the life’s course of the guests of honor. In this sketch the most important events in the life of the couple are depicted by means of geographic symbolism. Who else than the guests present can fill this sketch, the couple’s world, with special details and personal anecdotes ? The guests will find documents explaining the concept, in different places of the venue where they can write about the couple discretely and in all ease.
All the information collected during the party will be processed by Studio Martijn Kessler into an extraordinary piece of art.
In the above concept, the couple is presented with a marvelous gift in a playful manner and the guests are entertained with joint memories. The concept can easily be imbedded in a versatile program with music, speeches, performances and culinary highlights. The sketch is approximately 300x120cm(about 10feetby 4feet) and the size of original depends on the wishes of the client.
