Spatial Planning

Within spatial planning Studio Martijn Kessler is occupied in several areas. In the workshops for planners and companies/organisations active in spatial plannning the studio combines charting policy processes with actual spatial planning.

The studio is involved in developing future scenarios for architectonic-planning projects.

Every workshop is customized and delivered according to the client’s specific wishes. We can zoom in on the spatial planning side or focus more on relevant processes of the policy. In this capacity the studio was indirectly involved in the developments of the Westflank of Haarlemmermeer, the Schaalsprong(scalejump) of the city of Almere, plans for Geest en Grond(Mind and Soil), Nieuw Erfgoed Provincie Zuid-Holland(New Heritage Province of South-Holland), DHV, the city of Amsterdam, Dura Vermeer, the BAM and many others. For more information see: Workshops. Furthermore the studio is hired for art-manifestations, lectures and brainstorm-sessions wherein planning visions are launched.

Map made in a workshop by the department Water-Nature-Space of the engineering company DHV. The workshop’s purpose was recreational. All the employees had to find a spot on the map and they jointly took a look at the future. The structures and processes relevant to the organisation are clearly charted as well.

Plasticpark, Scheveningen (Pen drawing, 1985, 80x50cm) In this aerial perspective, inspired by the desolation of Scheveningen in the wintertime, Martijn tried to offer an impression of how the seaside resort could look.

Cover of Martijn Kessler’s prizewinning entry in a planning contest about an imaginary city in the Duin- en Bollenstreek(Dune- and Bulb region). The contest was launched by the province of Zuid-Holland(South-Holland) and inspired the municipalty of Lisse to invite Martijn to give a presentation about the future of Lisse.

Traditionally geofiction has quite something in common with spatial planning. The image above is a design by Martijn Kessler for an imaginary architectural project in Lisse. The drawing is part of an integral vision of the future made by Martijn Kessler of the municipality. Most important in this vision are esthetics, social cohesion and multifunctional use of land.

The vision of the future was financed by the municipality and presented in the Keukenhof. With this presentation the municipality intended to display a completely different vision on the various bottlenecks in the municipal spatial planning. In the drawing above you’ll see a solution for a planning misstep of the past. Almost none of the 80,000 tourists, coming to the Keukenhof on a yearly basis, visit Lisse’s shopping center because of all kinds of esthetic and infrastructural problems. In the area between the Keukenhof and Lisse Martijn Kessler projects a fun interspace meant to attract the tourists into the village. The hindering bypass severing the Keukenhof from Lisse has gone underground.

An image of Nieuw-Amsterdam(New-Amsterdam) 2050, a futuristic vision on the Haarlemmermeer. The map commisioned by the municipality of Haarlemmermeer for the occasion of the 150 year anniversary and served as a sign for the art-manifestation “Pionieri con tutti”.
